The course is designed to give you an introduction and overview to a large number of aspects of the field of Aromatherapy and provide an overview and introduction to this fascinating subject.

Aromatherapy is defined as:

Aromatherapy is a term used to describe the applied use of pure essential oils, often in combination with a specialised form of massage, for the purpose of improving a specific ailment, restoring energy levels, balancing the body & mind, and promoting general well-being

Course Content

The course covers the following syllabus:

Part A:  Essentials of Aromatherapy

Unit 1:  Introduction to Aromatherapy

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the basics of aromatherapy and how it works.

Unit 2:  History of Aromatherapy.

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand how aromatherapy evolved over the years

Unit 3:  Chemical Components in Essential Oils

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the chemical components and people involved with essential oils.

Unit 4:  What are Essential Oils

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand how essential oil is extracted, their uses, their effects and realise the importance of quality of essential oils.

Unit 5:  The Power of Smell

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand how the sense of smell works, its importance and its effects.

Unit 6:  Cautions

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand how toxicity occurs, know which essentials oils to use and avoid in pregnancy, basic guidelines using essential oils, how to deal with problems that might occur and assess any contra indications.    

Unit 7:  Carrier Oils

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Know the best and commonly used carrier oils, how to correctly store carrier oils, handling carrier oils and the basics of health

Unit 8:  Applying Essential Oils

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Assess the correct application of essential oils

Unit 9:  Massage

By the end of this unit, learns should be able to:

• Understand the different effects of massage, the benefits, basic massages for face, hair and mood.

Unit 10:  Symptoms

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand which essential oil is best used to treat different conditions.

Unit 11:  Common Essential Oils

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the most commonly used essential oils, how they are produced and their best uses.

Unit 12:  Introduction to Other Alternative Therapies

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand about herbalism, bach flowers, homeopathy, colour therapy, crystal therapy and meditation.

Part B:  Human Anatomy & Physiology

Unit 13:  Introduction to the Human Body

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the Human body structure, its functions, the life process and anatomical terminology

Unit 14:  Cells, Tissues and Membranes

By the end of this unit, learns should be able to:

• Understand cell structure, body tissues and membranes

Unit 15:  Skeletal System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions of the skeletal system, bone tissue, bone development and growth, classifications of bones, division of the skeleton

Unit 16:  Muscular System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions of the muscular system, the structure of the skeletal muscle, muscle types and skeletal muscle groups.

Unit 17:  Nervous System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions for the nervous system, nerve tissue, and organisation of the nervous system.

Unit 18:  Endocrine System

By the end of this unit, learns should be able to:

• Understand the endocrine system, characteristics of hormones and endocrine glands. 

Unit 19:  Cardiovascular System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the cardiovascular system, heart, and the blood.

Unit 20:  Lymphatic System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions and the components of the lymphatic system

Unit 21:  Respiratory System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the respiratory system, the mechanics of ventilation, respiratory volumes and capacities.

Unit 22:  Digestive System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions of the digestive system, general structure and the different regions of the digestive system.

Unit 23:  Urinary System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the functions and the components of the urinary system

Unit 24:  Reproductive System

By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:

• Understand the male and female reproductive system.

How the Course is compiled

Your course consists of the 24 Units, as advised above, and 12 Tutor Marked Assignments are required to be completed and sent to the college for marking. We send you the complete course by courier and you complete a series of assignments which you e-mail or post to your tutor for marking.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course just a basic knowledge of reading and writing in English.

Qualification

On successful completion, students will receive a UK Open Learning diploma.

Support

As an UK Open Learning home learning student you will have access to your own personal tutor helping you with your course work and with any questions you may have.

Study Details

This course can be studied at your own pace and there are no deadlines for assignments, however you must complete the course within 12 months from the date you purchased the course. To complete this course it will take in the region of 100 study hours which can be spread over a 12 month period.

No, there is no specific word count but you have to prove to the tutor that you have fully understood the question. One sentence answers will be rejected and you will be asked to re-submit the question.

Is there a final exam at the end of the course?

No, your qualification is awarded on successful completion of your assignments.
