Student Profile

This Mental Health and Psychiatry course is designed for anyone with an interest in Mental Health; particularly those who wish to become counsellors, therapists, social workers or find employment in other similar roles. It covers the main conditions which many people currently receiving counselling / psychiatric treatment are diagnosed with. This includes their causes, symptoms, the diagnostic criteria used by health professionals and the treatment approaches designed for these conditions.

The course also provides students with an understanding of the Mental Health system, the wide range of roles within it and important legislation in place relating to Mental Health, such as the Mental Capacity Act. Such legislation is clearly explained in easily understandable terms.

Students are further provided with guidelines on the standards they should aim to achieve when working with clients; in particular ensuring that they understand the importance of listening to their clients and validating their feelings. The course encourages students to form their own opinions using factual evidence to support their answers

After studying this course, students will be able to:

Study Method

The course is designed for study by distance learning at work or at home.  Students receive course manual, assignments and study guide plus tutor support.

Qualification

Level 3 Award in Mental Health and Psychiatry. Plus a UK Open Learning Diploma.

"At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Level 3 NCFE Award certificate of achievement. That means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland"

NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.

Assessment

Assessment takes the form of a series of assignments, which are completed by the student and then sent to the tutor by e-mail or post for marking.

There is no word count for the assignments. However, you must prove to the tutor that you have fully understood the questions asked.

Entry Requirements

With this being a Level Three course, a reasonable level of literacy is required. Otherwise there are no entry requirements for this course, just an interest in the subject.

Timescale

The programme takes place over a timescale to suit the student. Once registered, tutor support is available for up to one year or until completion whichever is sooner.

Location

The programme is home- or work-based enabling students to complete the course without having to attend scheduled college teaching sessions.

Tutor Support

Throughout the course, students will receive tutor support by email and by post. This will be for 12 months from the date you receive the course. To complete the full course will take in the region of 100 study hours which can be spread over a 12 month period.

Extra Online Support

The tutor has now set up a forum for all of our students studying Mental Health and related courses. This will assist you with your studies as not only will you get full tutor support from a professional tutor for the duration of the course but you will get help from other students who are studying at the same time as you.
